Expedia

As a Senior UX Designer at Expedia, I led the integration of the OneKeyCash Accelerator tool. I created wireframes to visualize and communicate the product structure early in the design process. I also developed detailed customer journey maps to enhance the user experience at each touchpoint. Additionally, I designed intuitive and engaging user interfaces and built interactive prototypes to test and refine our designs before final development.

Within the first six months of launching this feature, Expedia achieved over $4 million in spending and $99.8 million in gross booking value (GBV) from partner properties utilizing the OneKeyCash Accelerators. This initiative was a tremendous success.

Project Background

Expedia aimed to improve the user experience for both travelers browsing online listings and hotel partners utilizing the Accelerator marketing tool. The current tool showcased listings effectively for travelers and enabled hotel partners to create listings effortlessly, thereby enhancing the overall travel and advertising experience for all users.

The project had two main goals:

1. Engage travelers in the One Key Loyalty economy by maximizing value to travelers.

2. Foster partner excellence and strengthen relationships by rewarding great partners with additional value.

the problem

One of the initial challenges was seamlessly integrating the new OneKeyCash feature into the existing Accelerator tool. The Accelerator marketing tool was designed to be simple and user-friendly for hotel partners, so I needed to incorporate additional steps into the ad creation process without increasing the overall cognitive load.

UX Process and Deliverables

Below are some steps in the process to create the final product.

  1. USER PERSONA - I developed a persona derived from the Expedia UX Research team's interviews, incorporating key insights about the target audience. This persona detailed user needs, beliefs, pain points, goals, and background information such as age, gender, and behaviors.

  2. STORYBOARD - I crafted a storyboard to visually depict the customer's journey at each stage. This tool was instrumental in fostering empathy for users' experiences, helping us better understand and address their needs and desires throughout the journey.

  3. WIREFRAMES - Through extensive usability testing with our UX research team, we identified several pain points and opportunities for improvement. To address these, as the lead UX designer, I developed various wireframes, sketches, and low-fidelity prototypes, enabling stakeholders to interact with and evaluate the new design concepts.

  4. RESEARCH STUDY COMMON PAIN POINTS - Following the initial launch, the UX research team conducted a usability study to gather partner feedback on their experience. I developed updated prototypes for the team to utilize during this study. Post-study, I synthesized the insights into a research pain point map, providing stakeholders with a clear visual representation of areas needing attention and potential opportunities for improvement.

The solution / outcome

In the initial six months of releasing this feature, Expedia saw over $4 million in spend and $99.8 million in gross booking value (GBV) in the partner properties that created OneKeyCash Accelerators. This was a HUGE success.

Ensuring an exceptional user experience was central to the design execution. Expedia's Accelerator tool boasts intuitive navigation, streamlined date pickers and calendars, and interactive property listing previews, guiding users effortlessly through the ad creation process. I introduced the interactive OneKeyCash slider, allowing partners to easily compare the potential OneKeyCash earnings for travelers based on the chosen compensation level. Every interaction, from selecting dates to previewing ad sort order on the Expedia platform, is crafted to be smooth and user-friendly.
